Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although Vought provided no details on which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by the public and pledged to contest the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be resolved before then.

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck covering the end of the previous month but excluding the start of the current month, since funding lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
